Re: [RC] Crossing the border to Canada - Barbara McCrary

Rod Meier, a vet who used to live in Reno and who vetted a lot of rides in
Nevada is a border vet in or near Sweet Grass, MT the last time I heard.
Maybe that is a good border crossing point to go through, if a former
endurance vet is still on the job there.

Hi, Becky--

For paperwork, you need the Coggins within 6 months, and then you need an
international health certificate, which is different from the interstate
form. For Canada, it is good for 30 days from the time of exam, but the
catch is that the vet has to send it to your state USDA office for
endorsement, so you need to get it done about a week before you plan to
go, and that shortens its "useful" life. You must be back across the US
border before it expires, or else you have to have an exam at the border.

Depending on how long you plan to stay, there doesn't always need to be a
border vet present. For a weekend competition, you can get in and out
without needing to see the border vet. Some crossings will let you
through any time--others are time-specific. Best one for most of the
rides north of WA is the crossing at Osooyos (I think I spelled that
wrong--am having an old-timer's moment). It is on Hwy 97 just north of
Omak.

Things DO change from time to time, so it IS worth a telephone call to the
border vet in advance, IMO.

Heidi
