Re: [RC] Feeding in Extremely Cold Weather - Barbara McCrary

Fascinating messages, but where do you live, Mary-Anne, that you read the
temps in C, and how does it translate into F???

HI,

We just had a stretch of 40 below weather here. Our horses are outside
all
the time (we don't blanket). We just feed more, lots and lots more. We
increase their grain and hay and feed them warm beetpulp twice a day (they
may be a bit spoiled!). We also make sure they always have water
available.
Today it's -10C and raining which is not typical weather for us, don't
usually see rain again until April but it's been a strange winter!

Mary-Anne

Yesterday I heard on the radio that the temperature in Embarrass, MN was
54
degrees below 0. It is 8 degrees in Missouri today and I was curious
about
what people in 54 degree below temperatures do differently at feeding
time.
How do you go about getting enough calories into horses that are
unsheltered to keep them warm? How many calories a day does a 1000 horse
need when the weather is above freezing vs. below? Bob
