[RC] dogs in camp - Tracey Smith

Well said Barbara! I don't care how "well trained" a dog is...dogs are
animals and live by instinct...so sometimes they will act on that first.

To me saying "my dog is so well behaved it does not need a leash" is akin to
saying "my horse is so well trained he won't wander or run off...I don't
need a lead rope". As well all know, even the most well trained horses can
still spook (acting on their animal instinct)...and likewise dogs being
animals can't be blamed for acting on their instict either.

I like the slogan either Heidi or Angie quoted from the AKC (had never heard
it before) "unleashed is unloved". Now, don't get me wrong...that does not
mean I think folks who let their dogs loose don't love them...I just think
it'd be a good "rule of thumb" to live by.

The problem with this logic is that everyone seems to think that their dogs
are exceptions. All of THEIR dogs are perfectly behaved, etc. etc. That's
why ride managers cannot make exceptions. As for screaming horses, there's
little to be done there, but dogs can be either controlled or left at home.
