Re: [RC] Subject: Re: [RC] [RC] heart monitors and gps - April

One of the biggest draws of the SportTracks software is that it will download satellite and street maps from the internet to see your tracks on. Very nice.

SportTracks also has an equipment feature that allows you to keep track of mileage on certain equipment. Nice for people that are using boots to see how long each boot might last. Just an example.

The developer is very open to suggestions on new features.

You still need the Training Center (Garmin's software) to be able to update the wrist unit with new workouts and change heart rate and speed zones on the wrist unit. I still load my training data to it, too, so I have a backup.

SportTracks will also let you edit your tracks. You can look at each point and move it or delete it as necessary to get rid of those occasional errant GPS signal readings.

A cute thing it does: Say I ride out from home. Do my regular home ride. I load that to SportTracks and give the location name as "Home." The next time I do my home ride and load it, SportTracks figures that out and automatically knows the location and labels the new ride's location as "Home."

It still does all the normal things, like keeps track of daily, monthly, yearly summaries; shows times in HR zones. You can also see summaries based on the location. So I can see how many miles I rode out from home in the last month or whatever.

Did I mention SportTracks is free?

You can try to attach the HRM transmitter to the horse with a long chest strap and go. I, personally, don't like that idea for 2 reasons. 1) I have trouble getting it to read on my horse that way. Could be my horse, could be me. 2) I don't like to put my saddle over a chest strap. I fear rubs. I know somebody was going to use it without Roger's adapter kit, but I never really heard back on how that went.

Roger's adaption allows the user to use the nice large, flat electrodes under the saddle and under the girth like the horse one I bought 4 years ago.

You can see pics of the adaption at Roger's website.

There are more features than I listed, those are just the ones I can think of that are different from Garmin's Training Center off the top of my head.

What does the SportTracks software offer that the software that comes
with the Garmin 301 doesn't?  Also, what do you need to do to the Garmin
301 to make it ready for your horse??  Can't you just attach the HRM to
the horse with an extra long chest strap and go?

Thanks!
