Re: [RC] Rider weight - kazevedo

Okay, I'll stop being offensive, sorry everyone. I didn't mean to be at all, I just thought that a heavier person, like 225 lbs., would need a bigger boned and more muscled horse, but I guess that's not correct at all.

That is really a snotty thing to say. I'm not getting a bigger horse-I love the horse I have. She is 14.3 and 750lbs. I'm 5'9" and vary between 155 and 170. My mare has been carrying me for 40 miles a week for 6 years with no back problems, no lameness, nothing. I'm not ever going to weigh 110 pounds, and my horse is just fine thanks. I've been riding since I was two and I am balanced and my mare has never shown any problems. It isn't necessary for bigger people to have bigger horses. My other mare is 14.3 and built like a tank-today she rode me and my 5 year old boy double with no problems. My horses aren't going to be sold because of my size or theirs. They are part of my family. And yes, in addition to riding that much per week, I also work out at my health club 3-4 times per week. I'm sure not sitting around eating bon-bons.
I'd rather my mare carry my weight than a 100 pound rider that flops all over like a sack of potatoes.

Well, we aren't talking about beauty or appearance; we're talking about horses carrying over 15-20 percent of their body weight. I don't think this comment (made by guest "DLpugli") applies to everyone like Heidi said (some HW people are heavy because of muscle and height, not fat), but what I do think is that it is necessary for heavy people to simply try to keep from riding smaller horses for their extensive training. Bigger rider needs a bigger horse. JMO
