Re: [RC] Ponying - heidi

"...snaffles, kimberwickes, bits without shanks, just don't work well
for one-handed riding..."

I have found that it is just the opposite: Shanked bits don't work well
for two handed riding. Any attempt to direct rein with a curb will
result in the curb chain going tight and signaling a stop.

My current horses neck rein fine in snaffles, and they also direct rein
when asked.

THANK YOU, Ed! I've likewise never had a bit of trouble riding one-handed
in a snaffle with a reasonably broke horse. "Neck-reining" is a misnomer
anyway, since a "reiner" works about 95% off your seat and legs. I would
not hesitate to pony from a well-broke horse in a snaffle--it is the
"well-broke" part that is important.

Heidi
