[RC] Sliester Hackamore - Julie Fuller

You made a good choice. I've been using them for years on many horses, and I swear by them. And I second Ms Suhr's advice about the string. ( I just can't call her Julie... she's an endurance god to me, and I make it a habit not to call gods by their first names) I had that happen once too... luckily on one of those incredible dead nerve horses, who stand patiently and wait for us idiotic humans to fix it.

I tend to keep the chinstrap a bit tighter than most people... I think of it as power steering. I want quick response. I do loosen it for some horses though... the ones that are so easy to rate, you can ride them with a halter at the start of the season's first 50. *grin*

I use nothing but biothene for chinstraps. Unbreakable, easy to clean. Then I slip one of those nifty rubber chain gaurds over it.

One thing I have found.... if you've got a horse with a very fine small muzzle, the part where the chinstrap attatches will dig into their cheekbones when you pull back. This pisses them off eventually, as well as making them sore. That is why I keep the chinstrap tighter too.

I got smart though... I bought two hackamores in pony size. What a godsend! They fit those tiny muzzles so much better! The nose band is about an inch and a half shorter then the horse size.

Rarely, I have had to wrap a noseband with sheepskin.... usually when someone's nose is sunburnt.

Best regards,
Julie
