Re: [RC] How much land per horse in Michigan? - heidiI personally have 5 acres with about a 3 acre pasture with only one horse. We have talked about getting a second horse for my boyfriend. I think we will be ok since the grass is thick and there is lots of it. There is plenty of room for them to run and get lots of excercise. I am in Tennessee and I only keep horses up if it is really extremely cold. If it is raining and cold, then a shelter is a good thing. But if it is "really extremely cold" (as it gets here), I much prefer them to be out (and THEY much prefer it as well). Once the temps drop below about 20F, they are not likely to get wet (a good winter coat is such good insulation that snow may well accumulate on the horse without melting, if the horse is standing still), and in cold weather, the horses will exuberantly dash around from time to time in bouts of play. This helps to keep them warm, and also helps maintain good circulation to their feet. The #1 issue in extreme cold is FEED--and LOTS OF IT! (And by feed, I mean HAY.) I've seen horses nearly double their hay consumption in sub-zero weather.
