[RC] How much land per horse in Michigan? - Sharon Hahn

I live in Minnesota, which should be pretty similar.  I have two horses and two llamas now on about 2 acres of pasture.  I would say the llamas put together equal about 1/2 a horse in terms of grass consumption and pasture wear.  When I had three horses and two llamas, the pasture started to deteriorate a bit, so 2.5 horses seems to be the limit for 2 acres.  My animals are out 24/7 except for extreme weather, and I do feed hay year-round (a flake or so per animal in the summer and as much as two bales a day for the gang in the winter).  I have pretty fertile soil because I am near the Mississippi - people that live just 20 minutes or so from me have much sandier soil which doesn't grow grass as well, so they would need more land for the same # of animals.  My main problem is keeping the weeds down, not making the grass grow!

>>I am relocating to Michigan in the next year and would like to bring 2 of my
horses. Does anybody know how much land per horse I will need to be able to
keep them at my house. I am looking in the Kalamazoo and surrounding areas.
Thanks.
