Re: [RC] Was NC etc, now HRMs - Jody Rogers-Buttram

It certainly depends on the horse and how fit, and the weather and the terrain.   My mare is 1/2 Arab and 1/2 Paint, and she doens't run at the same rate as my purebreds.  She will be about 15 beats (sometimes) higher.  But of course I have to keep in mind that she is carrying more weight than the other horse I compare her to.(my daughter's horses, purebreds and carrying about 95 lbs total)  You have to learn the horse first (as Heidi pointed out) then consider the other factors.  If you will condition with it, you will get a better idea sooner.  Just putting it on at a ride doesn't work.  They will be high from excitement at first.  You kinda have to take that reading with a grain (block) of salt.

I am curious about this too as we work in the 150-160 range where others are
saying they are in the 120s. I know she is not totally fit yet, but if she
backs off OK, is this too high?
