Re: [RC] [RC] ? [RC] ? national championship ride, treatment, conditions, etc. - Spirittxarabians

We think that the HRMs are actually helpful for beginners to learn to read
their horse. Most beginners have a tendency to not pick up on the fact that
they need to drop the speed down to a walk or rest mode until way past time for
the horse to slow down, because the horse is in "got to keep up" mode which the
beginner reads as "doing fine". It will also sometimes indicate pain before the
horse shows it in any other way. It also helps teach new riders to slow down in
sand, mud and hilly terrain, because the pulse will go up with the conditions.
Where we have found it not to be helpful is when the temperature reaches around
90 degrees with humidity. The horses then need to work at a much lower heart
rate than the person would normally train at (say 110 to 120 instead of 130 to
140)and it is time to pay greater attention to respiration, attitude, etc.
Learning to read respiration seems to take longer for a new rider or horse
owner to learn how to read and may have to be pointed out and explained during
the moment.
