Re: [RC] OT - Pasture Manners - Susan Young

You did the right thing.  IMMEDIATELY let him (or her) know he or she did wrong.  The alpha mare will kick a wrong-doer in the side.  If the offense is more serious, she'll face the naughty one and expel him/her from the heard...eye to eye and facing squarely.

When my boys come to the barn, they know all "horse play" must stop before they gather at the door.  Otherwise the alpha mare will get mad and no one gets in the barn.  Dad handles this differently.  He tries to use physical force or scare them away.  They'll run over him in the barn...actually push him out of the way.  The alpha mare tactic works for me.

I've got a quick question for you guys. My mother and
I have our horses boarded together, she's got a
gelding I have a mare. Both are intensley jealous by
nature. Last night we were in the pasture, I had
brought my mare in and turned her back out after
working her, he'd been in the pasture. Out of the blue
he whirled around and kicked out at her with both hind
feet, coming close to kicking me in the process. How
do you teach a horse that it's *not* okay to kick
others when humans are around? When he kicked at my
mare, she whirled around, pushing me out of the way
and into the fence, but didn't kick.

Immeadiatly after him kicking I went after him yelling
and shaking her leadrope, he backed into a corner and
looked hurt, so he didn't just get away with it (and
he got no more attention from me last night!)

Thanks,
Steph
