[RC] cinch irritation - Karen

I like the string mohair girths, and wash them out after each days ride. They usually dry by morning. With one of my horses, I have to have the kind that has the cross strings that hold the thing together in the center only, and not partway up the side or else it will rub his hair. I also have to keep it evenly adjusted on both sides. I find that it also helps when I go to remove the tack to not take it off immediately. As I am coming in to a vetcheck or the finish, I like to loosen the girth a hole or two on each side and then continue to loosen it and let it remain on the horse until he is cooled out. That alleviates any kind of irritation (other than any irritation I may have when he rolls or tries to---with his tack on!). Then, I spray Eqyss rehydrating spray on him after he's been cleaned up, or else aloe vera juice. That helps keep the coat and skin supple so it doesn't scurf. When I wash these cinches at home, I use lingerie laundry bags and put them inside of those, works great. No soap, just run thru more than once if they aren't clean enough after one time. With really bad scurfing, massage some Bickmore's Gall Salve into the area afterwards. Karen in NV
