As I pointed out to Ed privately, not all wild horses are mustangs, not all BLM horses are mustangs. When you adopt a "mustang" that is actually simply a wild horse without pedigree, you are choosing your horse from just another grab bag. You could get one that will win the Tevis because it really is a mustang, or you could get one that is just two generations from a plow horse that a rancher turned out, and ruin the horse trying to get it to do something it's not suited for.

Some of us have been trying to point out that the grab bag approach to choosing a horse that will undergo much stress in conditioning and competition is not the wisest way to go about things.

You want a real mustang? There's a registry for those.
