RE: [RC] [RC] (no subject) - Howard Bramhall

It is a shame that more folks weren't there for her award. I do think the main reason is the heat in South Carolina that time of year. Because this is a night ride, the time of day after the ride is done for the 50 milers and LD riders is when everything starts to bake. At 1:30 in the afternoon it's getting close to 99 degrees. I find it difficult to blame folks for wanting to leave earlier, when it's cooler, to get their horses home.

It takes real courage to have a ride in the South this time of year. One must have an incredible amount of faith in the horses and riders to pull it off without any problems. Even riding at night doesn't make it completely safe since that's when the humidity gets close to 100 percent in the South. To complete 100 miles in that type of weather, in July, in South Carolina, is right up there with completing Tevis. An incredible accomplishment. Samantha rocks!

cya,
Howard (I'm surprised JD didn't have more kin around to welcome Samantha at the finish line)

At about 1:30 Sunday afternoon, Samantha Sandler crossed the finish line at
the Moonlight Ride as the winner of the 100 mile ride. The only ones present at
the camp when she finished were the ride manager,J.D. Fountain and myself.
The awards were given out for the 50 and 25 at 9:00. I realize that people have
to go to work and get some sleep before then, but J.D. and myself do too. I
think it a shame that this young lady rode the last 37 miles by herself with no
crew and there was nobody there to cheer her finish or congratulate her on
finishing 100 miles except two people who were supposed to be there until the
finish. Maybe some of you can call or email her if you can to tell her what a
good job she did last weekend. Im sure you would like for someone to cheer you if
you ever won a 100 mile race regardless of the circumstances. Congrats
Samantha!
