[RC] Abscess in Rear Hoof - Val Nicoson

Rode my mare before the farrier came and she was
"off"...kept "dropping" her rear quarters...so
explained that to the farrier who went looking for
what the problem was. Was worried it was a stifle
problem...fortunately that wasn't the case.

He found an early abscess in her rear hoof, toward the
inside of the white line, that was pretty close to the
back of the outside rear quarter.

Farrier opened up a small hole allowing it to drain.
He also used hoof testers as it was marginal if it was
active or not...it was active. She only reacted
mildly to the hoof testers.
Meanwhile I was told to soak it in warm water and
Epsom salts for 3-4 days and pack it with a cotton
ball soaked in Iodine. He told me not to wrap the
hoof or anything and that he wanted me to continue to
use her...at least light riding anyway.

Is this the typical treatment for an abscess? At what
point does a vet get involved? How do I know if it
clears up? What do I do with the open hole...do I
keep packing it with an iodine-soaked cotton ball
until it closes or what?

Should I continue to ride for up to one hour? Only
rode her once since the abscess was detected...and
that was with a hoof boot.
She will be off of work for the next 1-2 weeks due to
family being in town. I would like to ride her in a
30-miler LD ride in 3 weeks but don't know how long it
takes with an abscess involved...and I certainly don't
want to harm her.

Sorry for all the questions. Have never dealt with an
abscess before. Any advice would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,
Val + Sania
