RE: [RC] [RC]Horse Buying/Selling - Nancy Mitts

Ahhh, yes, the Hildago Syndrome. Grab one of these cheap off the range babies and they'll show them A-rabs a thing or two. Not. Really, there are a few nice ones. There are people who have what it takes to make good using horse out of them. Do I see them getting to the endurance trail in great numbers? No, I don't think so. The 40-50-60 year old riders who are getting into endurance aren't going to be spending the time and effort to get these horses gentled and down the trail. A lot of them board their horses and wouldn't have a place to keep one. I suppose some may give it a try, and it could hurt the market. I've been wrong once or twice before ;-]

What you all are forgetting is that the US Government has a
nation wide advertising program that cannot be equaled by
any private breeder. They are advertising and strongly
pushing mustangs for endurance. Realize that there have been
some very successful mustangs competing and the BLM (Federal
Agency) has an advertising budget and promotional budget far
exceeding that of the rest of the equine industry.

And the cost of the horses is far, far below what any
breeder could consider selling a horse for. In fact it is
well below meat price.

So, with this subsidized marketing of horses how do you
expect to compete?

That's not what I'm getting at, at all. The "central authority" would be no more likely to chose "correctly" than any one breed show fads do now. There just seems to be an attitude prevalent among endurance riders that it is somewhat "stupid" to pay several thousand for an endurance prospect instead of going to the local auction. If one is able to pay what it really costs a breeder to raise a horse up to riding age, it would be nice if they found a breeder whose stock they liked and buy from them to support their efforts. Not everyone can afford to do that, I understand. I started out with a $300 project horse, and there is something to be said for rescues. Maybe I'm just niave in thinking that there is NOT an endless supply of good horses out there to be bought at bargain prices.
