Re: [RC] poker ride - heidi

i'm having a group of people ogether for a trailride and i want to put
a little something different into it. has anyonw heard of a Poker ride,
where the riders try to get the best hanc of Poler? i don't know how it
is set up as i've never ridden one, just heard about it.

The few poker rides I've attended have had trail obstacles where you had
to complete the obstacle to earn your card. Usually simple stuff, like
crossing a stream, crossing a bridge, crossing a log, etc. They have been
about 8 to 12 miles of trail marked much like an endurance trail, with the
obstacles spaced out around the course and with a monitor at each one to
give each rider a card who earns it. Five obstacles = a five-card poker
hand if you can complete them all. Then usually a bonus obstacle at the
end where you can earn an extra card. Usually a first prize and some
lesser prizes, based on the poker hand that you earn/draw.

They do tend to draw the "weekend warriors" as David described, if they
are advertised. My most chuckly moment at a poker ride was when I was
just starting out my now-old stallion Abu Ben Surrabu as a green
5-year-old, and wanted some socialization in a trail setting. I arrived
late, saddled up, and set out after most folks were already out on course.
This ride had mile markers. We had just gotten nicely warmed up and into
a nice working trail trot, and as we came up on Milepost 1, we passed a
couple plodding slowly along on REALLY fat QH's. Clearly it was the wife
who was the "rider" of the pair, and poor hubby was just along for the
ride. As I rode by, I heard the husband exclaim in a horrified voice,
"You mean we've ONLY GONE ONE MILE??!?"
