Re: [RC] [RC] new vs old bloodlines - Ridecamp Guest

In studying bloodlines, how is it determined what is "new" and
what is "old"?

It takes years of study to become really familiar with pedigrees
in a chosen breed. I don't know any quick and dirty way to
say "old" vs "new" other than stating that modern show ring wins
are usually a sign of "new" (but not always).

Is "new" what is bred in the U.S. and "old" what is bred off
continent?

Nope. :) A lot of the best "old" lines in the US are those that
were the early imports to the country, so the living horses of
those pedigrees will often be many generations removed from the
imports. And in bloodline groups other than American-breds (like
Spanish or Russian or Polish), "old" vs "new" would be tough to
tell by how recent the imports in the pedigree are found.

In many/all cases, it's not just the "old" vs "new" in the
bloodlines, since those are arbitrary terms. It's the WAY the
horses were bred; it's the goals and visions of the humans
responsible for the breedings that took place.

What are the resources out there to figure this stuff out?

Erica, there are several yahoo groups that are devoted to
bloodline study in Arabians (and there are likely groups for just
about any other breed, too). ArabianPreservation &
ArabianBloodlinePreservation are two with really knowledgeable
and generous members. Feel free to join them and either lurk and
learn or jump in with questions! :)
