RE: [RC] [RC] Wolves, bears, snakes, public lands/yippee - Howard Bramhall

Ray, I can't really tell if you're serious with this post or not, but, let's just assume you are. I remember, years ago, sitting in a bar, I had gone in to get one beer after a rough day of air traffic controlling and I was in my Air Force uniform. This was back when men (or wimmen) in uniform weren't seen as heroes or people who got as much respect from the general public as they do now. Anyway, this guy comes up to me, never met him before, he had had a few, and began telling me how his tax dollars were paying my salary.

I just happened to have a calculator in my jacket pocket (I think it was tax season and I do my own taxes) so, with him watching, I crunched some numbers together figuring out, roughly of course, just exactly how much of his tax dollars came out to make up my annual salary. I was taking some college math courses back then so I thought I could actually do this within reason.

I came up with 2 cents. I reached into my pocket and gave this fellow a nickle. Told him he could keep the change and left the bar.

cya,
Howard

My opinion is that there are too many people and cows in the world and not enough animals that eat people.Having said that, one of course defends his livestock when neccesary.Just some perspective here:re wolves/grizzlies preying on elk herds on public land: do those public land elk exist only for the hunter or the hunting guide who makes a living hunting them? Of course not. MY interest in OUR federally owned lands is not the same as that of the hunting outfitter, who IS being subsidised by the public. He is also a taxpayer,in turn subsidising my interest in having grizzlies and wolves around. Re livestock predation:again, some balance here is called for.How much of western livestock ranching depends to some extent on MY subsidising it?How much of the west IS cattle country, absent federal/public subsidy of some sort? There are cattle all over Virginia, generally a profitable part time operation on small parcels of land.Absent grazing subsidies, can western cattle raising profitably stand in competition with areas of abundant rainfall? No? The guys in Virginia who raise cattle are not subsidised to my knowledge, and they damn sure are not getting any sort of cultural cowboy fantasy kick out of it.So...let's be moderate, and avoid extremes here.

We are talking about all the tools we can use to keep our horses safe and
alive at the rides. Training/conditioning is one of the best tools
available. It makes us better horseman and women, it benefits our horses
and could quite possibly be the key to preventing most crashes.
