You can do that on private land. On public land you don't normall have
control and can't close off areas. On dirt roads in public lands you
have even less since the road is open to public access. You can't keep
other users out of specific areas. In multi use public areas not all
the people will be associated with the ride and you will be sharing the
area with other and different types of trail users. They might want to
come watch, stop park their cars near the finish, etc., somthing over
which the RM has absolutely no control.
In some instances the RM has no authority - you are there as a guest
just like all the other trail users - over the control of an area.
That's when it becomes a challenge and there are some areas where that
challenge can get very interesting.
I think what sometimes happen is, originally, when set up, the finish
line is in a safe area. What happens at these crowded rides is folks
start parking everywhere, and, eventually, start migrating towards the
finish line area. Parking their rigs, setting up a farrier's location,
that sort of thing. By the time the ride manager finds our about it,
it's too late. People are dug in and getting them to move ain't easy.
Huh?? Being a ride manager entails delineating where people can and
cannot park--as well as designating areas for the farrier and other
vendors. A simple matter of a strip of surveyor's tape on lathe stakes or
fiberglass posts can mark off a "Do Not Park" area well in advance. And
if people are so rude as to park there anyway, part of the ride manager's
job is to be able to say "Move your carcass outta here--or else!!" A
manager is SUPPOSED to manage...
