Re: [RC] Cherokee Challenge - Susan Young

Let me second the praise for The Blonde!  What a GREAT mare!!!  Kitty had a fantastic ride on her, finished with a ride time of 8:22 (not too shabby!) and had a completely sound and happy horse at the end.  Also, the mare was a joy in camp, never made a peep (stallions all around), was a sweetie in the vet check, and was steady on trail.  I can't say enough good things about The Blonde.  While I'm at it, Kitty was a HOOT in camp as well!  We all had a lot of fun!

Just want to say what a great ride this was!  Thanks to Susan Young and her dad, Glenn Young and all the volunteers for putting on a fun event.
I want to brag on my little mare, the 1/2 arab/foxtrotter, now called The Blonde.  In May last year she backed up to an old stump and got hung up on some wire.  Field fence, it turned out, and the stump looked harmless from a distance. But it did a number on the mare. When I found her a few hours after she hurt herself, she was three-legged lame, with tendons sticking out from a tear in the lower back leg.  When I took her to the vet, on a Sunday, of course, she was so lame I thought he should put her down.  He refused!  Now I laugh about it, but at the time I was furious.  What good she could be if slightly lame, and that was the best he could promise, I didn't know, but I didn't want to wait to find out.
He told me to wait until Monday.  If the more experienced vet agreed, we would put her down.
To make a long story short, the older vet cut off some proud flesh, wrapped the wound and sent her home to me.  It took five months of very good treatment, constant wrapping, disinfecting, antibiotics, and lots of time.  But on Saturday she completed her first 50 since the injury.  What a great ride we had, she finished sound and happy, but not as happy as I am!
Thanks again for a great ride Susan, and thanks to all the people who gave me encouragement with her along the way,
