[RC] knapweed and lupine - Benedikte Whitman

Just a quick FYI - since there is more than one type of knapweed. I know
this discussion started out about spotted knapweed but now the subject
line just says knapweed.

In New Mexico and Colorado, we have a species called Russian Knapweed
which is toxic to horses and causes an irreversible, fatal, neurological
condition if they ingest it for about 30 days straight. They do have to
eat quite a bit each day and it is bitter so most horses don't eat it.
However, one of mine really likes it in the spring when it is green and
pretty and when I got him, I had just moved here, and had no idea that it
was dangerous - I let him munch it whenever he wanted.

Just in case anyone else wasn't aware of this poison.
