Re: [RC] Horses/Olympics - Truman Prevatt

Swimming and diving are very popular Olympics events. They draw large crowds and large TV revenues. They make lots of money and the host country makes lots of money on them. The facilities are already in place and synchronized swimming cost nothing to put on, and any money that comes in is plain gravy. That's why it is there.

Now Polo cost extra money for stables and the poly field. The polo field is not used for anything else. By eliminating it the host country can save money since it doesn't pay for itself. I would suspect that if the IOC went out the the list of potential host countries for the '08 Olympics and said, " resubmit your bids based on eliminating all equestrian events," there would be a cheer heard in the cities submitting bids.

They are expensive to put on, they don't draw large crowds and they don't draw TV revenues. At some point equestrian events will be eliminated from the Olympics because of economics. The trend has started with Polo the first and Eventing most likely the second.

One more issue I have with endurance as an Olympic
sport is that the Olympics are for HUMANS and
endurance is NOT a human sport. None of the equine
sports are human sports. We do not test the human's
athletic abiliies; we test the equine's abilities.
So, why are ANY equine sports in the Olympics?

Not that I care if endurance ever gets into the Olympics, but there were equestrian events in the ancient Greek games, so I certainly think they have more place there than synchronized swimming or that damned ribbon twirling nonsense.
