Re: [RC] Horses/Olympics - Mel Sherman

...take a 17 hand hot horse around even a STADIUM course--let alone a two-mile gallop over a cross country track--over 5' to 6' fences--timing your strides so you leave properly, and land properly set up for your next carefully paced 3 strides and take-off....THEN tell me the rider isn't an athlete, too...or for that matter--run the canyons at Tevis in 100+ degrees, (as did Becky Fiedler a couple of years ago)--and tell me the rider isn't an athlete, too.... :o)

Not to diminish in ANY way the effort put forth by our horses, but to do this or any other equine sport at a world-class level demands equally from both team members--you and your horse...

Not that I care if endurance ever gets into the Olympics, but there were
equestrian events in the ancient Greek games, so I certainly think they
have more place there than synchronized swimming or that damned ribbon
twirling nonsense.
