[RC] Mares vs. Geldings - Amy Cieri

God knows this can be a hot topic. A friend asked me why I purchased a 3 y.o mare when most horses in endurance are geldings. Honestly, I had no good answer why most are geldings but I could say that this mare was physically exceptional and was mentally mature , I believe, from growing up in a large herd and from being the alpha mare.

Do those of you competing on mares have difficulty at times pulsing down? Is there a concrete physical issue, or is it a social issue? Or something entirely different.
I have noticed recently, an increase in the mares in the regional standings. Jeannie Waldron told me that she prefers mares over geldings because they will give you more of themselves. I found that to be true of my other mare but then again I have had the pleasure of competing on numerous geldings who would never quit.

A friend once said, "the only thing a mare is good for is to make a gelding!"  I laughed and continue to appreciate to good in both.
