Re: [AERC-Members] [RC] It's not the distance... - Truman Prevatt

Can a horse run on stress hormones when something is brewing that would allow him to fly through a stop and go and crash 15 minutes down the trail?

I had a ride with a 15 minute check, we threw it in at the last minute since the vet didn't like the long last loop back to camp. It's amazing how much they really can eat and drink - especially drink once they get off the go down the trail high - in 15 minutes. So I don't know about stop and goes.

Okay, so if we assume that different horses need rest stops at different
places and different times, and we are trusting the rider enough to
determine when and where that is; and yet we don't trust the rider enough
not to have them check in with a vet now and again....then what about the
old concept of pulse and go's at certain places along the trail without an
enforved wait time or full vet check to go along with it?

I'm not saying a P&G should *replace* a vet check and mandatory hold of x
number of minutes. Just possibly replace one or more of the standard
fifteen minute holds when it seems not much gets done by way of eating or
drinking, anyway. I haven't attended any of the XP rides, but it seems that
the Duck does a pretty good job of keeping an eye on the horses via
motorycle and binoculars without mandating they all be waiting in a line for
him (and yes, I know the Duck is a unique creature and you can't listen to
gut sounds from the next ridge over).

Just something a friend and I had been talking about. Curious as to other
opinions.
