Re: [RC] Cow hocked question - Charles

For what it's worth, when I went to "Shire Camp" (www.tallyhoshires.com) I
learned that for drafts what others would call "cow hocked" is normal. If
you want an explanation why it isn't "cow hocked" take a look at
http://scratchbottomshires.com/hockset.html.

If your stallion is cow hocked, and it is a fault, why breed him? If he
just has close set back legs, it might help him because "close hockset
allows the horse to get his feet well up under him in order to provide the
most impulsive force and leverage for the least effort. "

Let me know what turns up. I'm always curious.

Subject: [RC] Cow hocked question

Hi,
My 2 year old Shagya Arabian stallion, whom I plan to
train for endurance someday, is slightly cow-hocked.
It is mainly noticeable when he is standing relaxed. I
only noticed it when he walks or sets up after I
REALLY started looking for it. Could this pose a
problem for endurance?
