Re: [RC] Aroma Therapy (was:Suitability to become an endurance horse (was: ... - Joe Long

I'd be quite interested in learning if aromatherapy is OK with the
AERC rules, because whatever Kat (my wife Kat Long) was using sure
seemed to work!

Odors contain molecules that bind to the sensitive sites in the receptive
tissues (nose) and so a signal is transmitted to the brain. I think they work
in
somewhat the same way as any other stimulus, (causing release of
neurotransmitters) including acupuncture, massage, or chiro, therefore, they
would be
classified the same way under rule 13A:"

The use of additional therapies during competition
shall be prohibited. This shall include any invasive
procedures, (e.g.: acupuncture), manipulative procedures,
(e.g.: osseous manipulative procedures), the use of any
devices to manipulate or stimulate accupressure or response
points, (e.g.: Bioscans, laser lights, magnetic stimulation
devices etc)...."

The following site is Neurotransmitters for Kids, a very simple site that
discusses how they work. I found it helpful in visualizing how odors can
cause a
calming sensation, ie a chemical change in the body.

I know one of my new mentors, Heidi, will correct me if I'm wrong. jeri
