Re: [RC] Snakes on Trail - Maryanne Stroud Gabbani

We have some fairly amazing snakes here and I have to confess that I haven't gotten to know the kinds. The fellaheen don't bother to learn the types (as is the case with most Egyptians) and they simply kill any snake that they see. I try to keep this to a minimum, at least on my property. As far as I know, we don't have any really aggressive snakes, although we do have some very poisonous ones. I've seen a few while alive and they are usually in a bit of a hurry about leaving. None of my horses could be bothered about snakes, and actually I worry more about the dogs. But there's nothing like riding past an Egyptian cobra that is about 5" in diameter as it slides into the grass. Maybe I'm warped, but I thought it was really cool.

Sheila, I'm with you. I like snakes, even the venomous ones---including the
one that gave me a good chomp in the leg 25 years ago (still got the scar).
And I was *with* a herpetologist friend in the Everglades that (as I lay
writhing on the ground), ran over and said, "Oh, look, a pygmy rattler!
Aren't they beautiful?" Moral of the story, watch where you're putting
your feet and don't expect sympathy from field biologists. <bg> Anyway, I
figure the snakes do more good than harm, and they have as much right to a
trail as I do. I just keep my eyes peeled, trot on by and leave 'em be.
