Re: [RC] [Guest] bad behavior - Bette Lamore

Hi Carol
We have a gelding named Fireworks that we bought as a 4 year old from Sheila Varian and he lived up to his name. The only reason we bought a green green 4 year old in the first place for my novice husband was because Mark is 6'5" and this gelding is 16hh. Well, we wondered why her staff was always asking how they were doing until he finished his training and still shyed 40 feet at a 90 degree angle at a dead gallop. My husband's butt made more contact with the ground during those first two years than the saddle. He finally gave him to me as my Country English Pleasure (he is a Traditio son) and trail horse and I loved riding him trail and got him ready to show--- well by then Mark was seasoned and wanted this magnificent snorting horse back. Still dicey from time to time but by then Mark could handle him.
Well, by the time he turned 8 he was the best trail horse we ever had---- the first one over water, trees, whatever--- so steady we put beginners on him.
Soooo, the moral is, it may take some years and there is hope with many miles behind them. Also, when he would shy at something, I would make him circle it three times and then go over the bugaboo, if possible. We had some humdinger battles at first--- I was more tenacious than him and would not leave the spot until he did what I asked. Finally he got to the place where he would start to shy and then remember our routine and "grit his teeth" and bear it rather than the alternative. Did not take that long before he trusted that I would not take him anywhere that was not safe.
The ultimate challenge was when he won the Championship for Co English over Sheila's star horse--- and he was stopped near the cattle shoot with cows in it when the judge asked us to drop his reins and stand quietly. Hearts in our mouths, but the boy did great!!!
Keep the faith!!
Bette

I write seeking the wisdom of all you endurance riders who deel with high
energy horses.

I have a 6 year old NSH (3/4 arab, 1/4 saddlebred) gelding who has me at my
wits-end. He has been trained as a hunter and shown on the flat. His
arrena work is great,he hates showing.

I really think it blows his mind, and he looks for any way out possible.
Like switching leads behind, cantering in place in the line up, stoping at
the out-gate, and the newest trick, rearing at the transitions and in the
line-up. My friends tell me to unload him befor he hurts me.

So... I bring him home and take him on the trail. The problem with that is
he is barn-sour and opens up his bag of tricks befor we are on the trail 5
minutes! I can get him through it and on the trail, at which point he is
relaxed and well mannered. He doesn't try to run when we turn for home like
you might expect, but he does however have momentary lapses when he thinks
about turning around.

Usually when something startles him and I let him stop and look. It seems
to me that my problems arise when he has time to think about what I have him
doing, like when stopped, walking, or transitioning from one gate to
another. I think he is very inteligent, but not very honest. Or, is he to
high energy for showing and trails.

I don't know if I should hold on to him and not expect to much, until he is
more mature and/or I have time to work him harder. I guess I could lunge
him befor I ride him. But he is 6 years old, will I be lunging him at 15?
He is a beautiful mover, very athletic, and strong. Every now and then I
see the wonderful horse he could be. But, am I wasting my time on a mental
case that will never be trust-worthy?

Any help would be appreciated. carol
