[RC] [Guest] bad behavior - Ridecamp Guest

carol soscbk@xxxxxxx

I write seeking the wisdom of all you endurance riders who deel with high
energy horses.

I have a 6 year old NSH (3/4 arab, 1/4 saddlebred) gelding who has me at my
wits-end. He has been trained as a hunter and shown on the flat. His
arrena work is great,he hates showing.

I really think it blows his mind, and he looks for any way out possible.
Like switching leads behind, cantering in place in the line up, stoping at
the out-gate, and the newest trick, rearing at the transitions and in the
line-up. My friends tell me to unload him befor he hurts me.

So... I bring him home and take him on the trail. The problem with that is
he is barn-sour and opens up his bag of tricks befor we are on the trail 5
minutes! I can get him through it and on the trail, at which point he is
relaxed and well mannered. He doesn't try to run when we turn for home like
you might expect, but he does however have momentary lapses when he thinks
about turning around.

Usually when something startles him and I let him stop and look. It seems
to me that my problems arise when he has time to think about what I have him
doing, like when stopped, walking, or transitioning from one gate to
another. I think he is very inteligent, but not very honest. Or, is he to
high energy for showing and trails.

I don't know if I should hold on to him and not expect to much, until he is
more mature and/or I have time to work him harder. I guess I could lunge
him befor I ride him. But he is 6 years old, will I be lunging him at 15?
He is a beautiful mover, very athletic, and strong. Every now and then I
see the wonderful horse he could be. But, am I wasting my time on a mental
case that will never be trust-worthy?

Any help would be appreciated. carol
