Some people never introduce their horse to LD's and start out on slow
50's.
It's all in the management, slow and consistent conditioning and sensible
riding and not getting caught up in riding some else's ride. If you ride
with experienced endurnce riders on training rides and learn from them, it
makes the process immeasureably easier. Hopefully there is a club in your
area and you can hook up with experienced riders. If not, the RC archives
are full of condition programs described right here on Ride Camp. (I , of
course have a difficult time finding anything in archives but it can be
done).
Try not to be so quick to see positive contributions as disparaging
criticism.
Howard's success is happily seen and I, for one am happy to see him
finally
climb out of the sad pit he will tell you he was in last year. He worked
hard to learn and hopefully he will continue to apply what makes sense to
him for his horse. Most of the cautionary comments, I see as hoping to
help
others avoid the same pitfalls. I suppose it is all in the receptors.

OK, for all those who don't like the way Howard
is going about things, instead of disparaging him and those who
congratulate him, how about desribing, in detail, what YOU
think is a safe, sound training progam? How many miles of LDs,
with what sort of recovery rates, should a horse have before
advancing from LDs to longer distances? What pace should a new
horse be started at, and how do you determine when to advance?
How is that 'solid base' obtained? What has worked for you?

Teach us, oh Wise Ones: we want to learn!
