Don't know about 'closet' fans.  I understand LOTR is the second highest
selling book of all time world-wide (behind the bible).

Lots of people 'like' it, or have read it once when they were young, or read
The Hobbit, but there are also societies and clubs that make Trekkies look
like part-timers so your brother is in good company <G>

My colts are named GWAIHIR and GLAMDRING and it is always fun to see
someone's face light up when they hear the names...  like a not-so-secret
handshake.
