[RC] Horse falls down when it sleeps - Benedikte Whitman

In the recent issue of The Horse (I think), there was an article on the
leg's stay mechanism. One of the things the article discussed was that
all horses need REM sleep, although much less than humans. It said that
horses only get REM when they lie down, it does not happen when they stand.

Regarding older horses, they think that some older horses that are thought
to be narcoleptic actually have difficulty lying down because of joint
problems. When they don't lie down, they don't get REM, and because it is
necessary to continued function, eventually they just fall over.

I don't know if this could be anything similar to any of the horses
described, but it is another possibility.
