[RC] Ride/Race After-care - Roger Rittenhouse

Frank asked what do we ( I ) do in post race care of my horse.

After we get back to the trailer. I go over him looking for surface issues
- cuts scratches etc. I clean up the legs and feel for problems - heat
swelling anything NOT normal.
make sure he has hay and water
get a beer

Next I soak legs well with either my home made leg liniment or the OHC
Stockin-Up.
Place ice boot on the front.
If we went hard and if I 'think' it good - I place ice boots on the rear.
Leave ice on for 20 minutes

Remove ice and apply liniment and check legs well.
I check the HR from time to time for an hour or so.
watch the respiration.
look for thumps.
listen to gut sounds.
do this every hr for a few hrs.
make sure there is a good choice of NEW hay and water.
my guy wont take up much BP after a ride/race
offer OATS- about one pound right away - just as in a VC I want him to
eat, fiber and carbs.

dose again with elytes -standard dose as used in a VC
may add one oz of carbo supplement.
mix elytes with 2 oz of Se-E megasel
add 2000 to 5000 IU of vitE
mix 2 oz of MSM if I remember.

I also feed free choice a grain based elyte called J BAR D E-LYTES, He
LOVES this stuff. It is in the pen from the time we get there. I may mix in
a handful of ABC PLUS He took up about 6 oz of this stuff AFTER his last
ride.. HOT humid.

Take for a 5 -10 min walk around, after the first hour.

Take for 5 min walk-about and let graze on grass if it is available, else
OP hay piles down at the VC. Try to get a walk every 2 hrs.
give peppermint candy.. helps with guts. and appetite.

after an hour -may ice legs again 20 min
then apply poultice- no wrap

feed 1 to 2 pnd of what ever grain he will eat - been using oats and a
packaged enduro mix 10% protien 10% fat 6% fiber. He will NOT take wet
BP for a few hours after. I try to toss in a pnd of oats or the feed every
2 hrs during the evening.

drink a few beers during this process. take a shower --- drink more
beer....
dont visit much until I know he is OK and doing well EDPPM.

Then I vist but dont leave camp nor stray far from the rig.

In the am I feed a pnd or 2 of oats, elytes, VitE, MSM, wet legs with what
ever I think he needs, put on leg shipping boots - load up and go. I
provide water hay and oats or the feed mix in the trailer. Stop in 4 hrs
for fuel. If the trip is going to be over 6hr I unload for 30 minutes-
walk around - find grass

Arrival at home hose off legs, turn out
Get a new beer. Unload clean out and reload the rig for the next 2 hrs...
horse is gone with his herd..sound happy healthy

I do more the next few days after the ride, but that may not be really
needed. it is just me being over intense with a good recovery.
