Re: [RC] Beet pulp...aged horse...soaking? - csimmons88

I'm curious on the amounts you're feeding. My mare is 31; looks great and
no one can tell she's a geriatric except her dentist. We've been doing well
on the Equine Sr & alfalfa pellet but I've been having thoughts
(intuitive...?) about adding beet pulp to her diet. She has free access to
so/so grass pasture for busy work (western WA state).

Being from Southern CA she always dreamed of being barefoot & able to graze
round the clock. Did her first ride at 4 in 1976 and fastest 50 at 18 (5
hours).

She's TBX and was always a big eater in her athletic days and she's
maintained her girlish figure which is more than I can say but am concerned
about teeth. She had the super wammy tooth float last year and is due for a
general float and luckily still has them but how long's the suggested
soaking and do you have to soak the shavings?

What I used to get in So Cal was the large pellets that had to be soaked.
Usually just left overnight (cool weather) for the mid-day snack.

Any suggestions?
Cindy

The price on beet pulp pellets at my local feed store (Springerville AZ)
has jumped from just over $10 to over $16 in the past year. Has the
price
jumped everywhere or am I being gouged? What are the alternatives to
beet
pulp?

Zowie! I'm paying $7-something per 50# bag! (Good thing, too, cuz I've
got
two toothless old men who subsist on beet pulp, alfalfa pellets, and
Equine
Senior.... Never mind any that we feed to the horses we're riding...)
