[RC] award perspectives - rides2far

So you successfully finished an endurance ride. Great. How does
the fact that your buddy who didn't finish gets to wear the same T
shirt lessen your accomplishments?> Lighten up a little. No need to
rain on their parade, doesn't hurt you a bit.

To tell you the truth, when I'm winning top 10, ranked in the points, and
very much a contender for BC it doesn't even cross my mind. I have a lot
at stake at the awards and have a real reason to be there and pay
attention. It was when I was a beginner that it mattered. A completion
was a big deal to me.

Now my horse and I are starting to slow down a little. The new trend of
giving stuff to everybody got started during the years when I was getting
something at most awards presentations. Now I may or may not *just*
complete and it kinda surprised me how inconsequential you feel at the
awards when the only people who are participating are those who ran fast.
If I manage another ride I want to make completion a big deal. I'm sorry
some people won't complete. Been there, done that. Got the scar. But it
seems sort of sad when people say "maybe you could give a little
something *extra* to those who finished" as if finishing was not a big
deal. So, we're going to have managers buy completion awards...and then
"really completed" awards?

God grant me the Serenity to enjoy a sound horse when I have one. The
self control to not ride a questionable horse when I have one, and the
wisdom to know the difference.
