[RC] RC] starting times - rides2far

I ride my horse in the LD's because
it's just > a speeded up version of the trail rides she does 2-3 times
a week > and I feel > like it is not going to hurt her. I never ride
more than 20-25 > miles on my > trail rides so I feel like a 50 miler
would probably stress

Whoa there Linda,
You think that 50 milers are out doing 50 mile *training* rides? Do you
think 100's do 100 mile training rides? Your horse is probably *so* ready
for 50. I've done lots of 50's on lots of horses, and some 100's. I can
count the times I've ridden over 25 miles in training on one hand. Think
of endurance more like hiking than jogging. A horse's legs have a spring
loaded quality that makes jogging for them like jogging on a trampoline
for us. If you hiked 5 miles three times a week, I have no doubt that you
would have no trouble with a 10 mile hike. That's more the analogy I'd
make on training and distance for our horses. I've gotten in far more
trouble overtraining than anything. To do a 100 you train pretty much
the same as for 50, just for more years. The biggest thing they've got to
get before they make that jump is *religion*. When they learn to eat and
drink and pace themselves the physical part will hold up for the added
distance.

God grant me the Serenity to enjoy a sound horse when I have one. The
self control to not ride a questionable horse when I have one, and the
wisdom to know the difference.
