[RC] [Guest] WNV Study - Ridecamp Guest

On Behalf Of Maryanne Stroud Gabbani

Uh, Truman. Where in the Middle East? I know that NAMRU, the military
medical research unit in Cairo, had established that a vaccine for humans
would not be difficult, but according to their website it was not worth the
effort. We, in Egypt, only heard about West Nile Virus before you guys by
accident because we happened to have a visiting vet with good connections to
NAMRU who arranged to test a bunch of horses for different strains of
encephalitis about 5 years ago. There wasn't a vaccine until the US
companies started marketing it....and many of us opted out of vaccination
because a) with our exchange rate it's really expensive; b) how do we know
that it is for the same strain of WNV as we have in the Nile Valley (the one
in the US is from Israeli geese); and finally c) as far as we could see we
were being asked to be guinea pigs and pay for the privilege. All together,
it added up to a big "Thank you. No thank you." Now if southern Europe has
had a vaccine for WNV, that's another story.

On Behalf Of Truman Prevatt

The rates of treatments required for fully vaccinated and bootered
horses my vet had last year leads one to believe that the vaccine is not
anywhere near the 90% declared by the vaccine manufacturer. However,
this virus is not necessarily new - it has been around for a long time
in the middle east and southern Europe. This all makes one wonder what
is going on. All I know is just because you have vaccinated, don't think
you are completely protected - you are not. You still have to remain
vigilant to the signs of WN and call your vet at the first sign and get
treatment started ASAP.
