[RC] WNV Study/symptoms - heidi sowards

UC Davis has a great website that has a video you can
download to watch what the symptoms really look like. Very
informative!

Interesting thing is, the new vaccine that is being
developed is being denied by Ft. Dodge. I talked to my
vet's office about the new vaccine that will be released in
the future and they talked to the Ft. Dodge rep. The rep.
denied that it would be used for horses. She told my vet it
would be for dogs. The Yahoo WNV board had a post from
someone who was told by Ft. Dodge that the new vaccine was
a hoax. However, the application to the Dept. of Ag. was
also posted by Dr. Eleanor Kellon on that same board. Not
sure why all the denial, except to keep people buying the
current vaccine. And if the current vaccine is so great
(90%) then why even make a new version? I've read about too
many horses that were vaccinated that ended up with it.
However, I've chosen to vaccinate, as the concensus appears
to be that the vaccinated horses do tend to recuperate
better, or so the posts make it seem.

The rates of treatments required for fully vaccinated and
 bootered
horses my vet had last year leads one to believe that the
vaccine is not
anywhere near the 90% declared by the vaccine
manufacturer. However,
this virus is not necessarily new - it has been around
for a long time
in the middle east and southern Europe. This all makes
one wonder what
is going on. All I know is just because you have
vaccinated, don't think
you are completely protected - you are not. You still
have to remain
vigilant to the signs of WN and call your vet at the
first sign and get
treatment started ASAP.
