Re: [RC] New Study - kstandefer

This from the Mayo Clinic:

Most studies have used glucosamine sulfate supplied by one
European manufacturer (Rotta Research Laboratorium), and it
is not known if glucosamine preparations made by other
manufacturers are equally effective.

I came across a new promising study from the
"Osteoarthritis and Cartilage" journal. It is in their
February 2008 issue, by authors Bruyere, Pavelka, and
Rovati.
Essentially they found through placebo-controlled trials
over a three year period that the progression of joint
space narrowing in osteoarthritic knees was significantly
slowed in those who took glucosamine sulfate (not
glucosamine HCL). There was a significant decrease in
knee replacement surgeries in the glucosamine patients, as
well.
There is a supportive list of references, and the authors
call for more long term research to attempt to confirm
these promising results. Interestingly, the results of
studies on the effects of glucosamine on pain remain
somewhat equivocal. But if the joint can be preserved
longer, pain can be managed by other mechanisms. Delaying
or avoiding joint replacements is a good thing. Bruce
