Re: [RC] re: Bryce and wilderness - Truman Prevatt

Barbara,

I do not know. The AERC would need to work with the land management agencies to come up with a format that might be acceptable. I'm a very pragmatic person. Sitting around grousing about it sure won't solve it.  We don't have the numbers to change it.  The only option I see is to find out how we could have rides that use Wilderness that would be acceptable.  If taking the competition out with only lifetime mileage for the rides and maybe limiting the size of the rides (but some rides are already limited in size) it might work. I know there are organized hikes in Wilderness areas since I've been on such a hike. No one knows until they ask and try to work the problem. If enough members would like to see such a ride if the could run on Wilderness lands - then they should tell their directors. It actually may not be possible without a bylaws change.

It's not going to get address until the AERC addresses.

The problem the AERC has is the 1964 law which forbids competitive events in Wilderness areas. Since the AERC has less an a snowball's chance he Hell changing that - it's on their plate to define a format that allows organized events - which satisfy the requirements of the law. The other option the AERC has is to keep whining about it.

Truman.
