[RC] re: mares - Cindy Collins

I was a die-hard believer in riding only geldings for the first nine years of my endurance career. I had nothing but negative feelings about the mares I'd been around. That all changed in 1990 when I had the opportunity to ride Jackie Bumgardner's mares Sierra Spunk, and then later, FM Fad Serene. To this day, "Serene" ranks as my all time favorite horse ever...and I never even owned her and only rode her on 350 miles of competition (including one of my BH 100 finishes). Since then I've actually preferred mares, though I own both. Mares can be very opinionated, be prepared for that. So, as almost everyone has said, pick the individual horse and don't let the sex of the horse interfere in your decision making. Cindy
