It's the horse that survives the illness (and the horse flies that transmit the virus via their blood meals)that is the danger to non-infected horses. It takes 5-6 weeks for a horse to either die or to survive EIA. Anytime during that 5-6 weeks the horse could get bitten by a mosquito or a horse fly and the disease could get passed on (it could be passed on via multiple use of a needle without sterilization between uses, by the way). And if, for some reason, the EIA wasn't caught and the horse survived - they do survive it - they'd be primarily non-symptomatic carriers after that and for the next 8-10 months after a negative Coggins test, they could be carriers coming to rides or shows or any horse event. That's why I don't figure a negative Coggins result is going to be a sure bet that a horse is "safe" to come to a ride or other horse event. Thankfully, EIA isn't the rampant disease it used to be (fewer than 1 percent of the 1 million horses tested annually are found to be carriers). That's the safety factor for our individual horses, not the test itself. _____________________________________ Lif C.
