[RC] re: helmets - Cindy Collins

If you are going to say you refuse to wear your helmet, that's your decision. But, just say that's my choice and I don't really give a **** about whether or not I become a horrible burden to my children, friends and society over something so simple to prevent. It really ticks me off when people make up "BS" reasons why they don't wear them..."it didn't protect my neck"...duh...it wasn't supposed to. The rest of these reasons are so ridiculous that I don't even know how to respond. Horse helmets don't cover your ears! Wonder how top motorcycle enduro riders can "hear" with their full face helmets as they race through the woods. My husband and I both wear helmets on our motorcycles and we can hear each other talk. There's no comparison between those full face helmets and a Tipperary or any other horse helmet. I think others made wonderful points about the fallacy of a DNR being the end all. If you're just brain damaged, you'll be a heck of a burden on your children and friends. Maybe, we'll get lucky, though, and you'll have just enough brain function left to be used as an example for the rest of your life as a reason why we should all wear helmets. They can roll you out to help pass new rules. Your children and husband can say that you loved them enough to make them wear helmets, but didn't love them enough to protect yourself. I also think the hypocracy of, "I make others wear a helmet, but I'm so talented that I don't need one" is pretty weak, too. I wish I could say this stuff without it sounding so mean spirited, but you have no idea how it makes me feel to hear someone reinforcing the idea that if you are a good enough rider, you don't need a helmet. I am not for more rules, but frankly you are changing my mind. If all equestrian sports required it, you'd find one, you'd wear it for years, complain for a while, get 100% use to it and wonder why you ever cared. It would just be part of the package of riding a horse. And, face it, we'll put up with lots of pain and discomfort to be able to ride a horse. A helmet is pretty minor for a group of folks I've seen riding with blood running down their legs from rubs, riding in casts with broken legs, arms, wrists, etc. or riding with every known ailment, including pneumonia, just to finish a ride. BTW, if you wonder why I have so much anger over this, I, too, have several loved ones who refuse to wear helmets even though they openly admit that they know they should.
