RE: [RC] NC/Holds - EnduroGal

Having done several "long runs" myself, I agree with that.  If I was doing a
50K or a 50-miler and had to stop for 40 minutes at each checkpoint, I'd
have cooled down and stiffened up to the point I couldn't move!!  However, I
know that I personally need to eat frequently during events like this...
horses don't... and sometimes a horse may need some time to get into
eating/drinking mode during his hold periods.  I guess there are pros and
cons however you look at it...

I don't think so, it's mostly tradition.  I've long felt that the  
forced holds are more for the riders' benefit than the horses; that  
is, a lot of riders want them.

Do you know of any Marathons that make the runners stop for a half- 
hour halfway through?  I don't.  A runner who is training avoids  
stopping, if traffic forces him to stop he will "run in place" while  
waiting.

It seems to me that every time a horse stops for more than a couple of  
minutes his system begins winding down and has to crank up again when  
he starts back.
