Re: [RC] Tie or Not Tie in Trailer -- Traveling with head very low - Karen Everhart

Val -
First, talk to your Vet to see if there is any medical reason for the posture you have described.

For the most part, allowing your horse to adopt a trailering position which is most comfortable for him/her is the best solution.  Also, cleaning the airway can only be done with the head lowered and is critical to respiratory health during trailering with all the blowing shavings, dust and road "crud".

One of my horses likes to travel with his nose down to his knees or lower, or at least we sure think so.  Everytime we have hauled him when he's not been tied, when we went to check on him his head is way down, oftentimes below the hay manger.  Since I don't feel comfortable with his traveling with his head that low I've gone to tying him so he can't lower his head quite so low.  How do others feel about this??  Should I be tying him to keep his head up within reason, or let him travel with his head that low.

Both of my other horses travel good without having to be tied.  One stays where I put her and the other will attempt to turn around if there is room.

Thanks in advance,
Val
