If calcium is dangerous in water, we and all of our animals would be dead. We have so much calcium in our water we have to soften it to wash anything...clothes, skin, hair, dishes. It deposits on water troughs in the form of a firm grey stuff that I scrape off every few months. The horses love it and chew it off the water troughs.

I thought I had learned that the calcium would leach out of the limestone and into the water. Is that only under certain conditions, or totally wrong?

Nope.  Concrete is made from Limestone, Alumina and a few other ordinary
rocks.  Much of Municipal water purification systems are made from
concrete.
