Re: [RC] This is worth reading - Steph Teeter

The real interesting thing about this is the Dubai - Abu Dhabi power rivalry and how it is playing out. and these are high stakes games - between two emirates, previously bedouin tribal groups, with a century of rivalry, and lot of modern ambition (Dubai) and lot of oil (Abu Dhabi).

here's a timeline of relevant events/observations:

btw - the article that was published (by a Dubai owned newspaper- al Maktoum) was written in 2006 and only now, is action being taken against it.

2002 WEC - won by Abu Dhabi royalty

2004 WEC - hosted by Dubai, the winning horse (ridden by Abu Dhabi royalty) was tested positive for drugs (in bizarre and secretive manner which resulted in the winner being ousted 20 minutes before the closing ceremony to the surprise and embarrassment of Abu Dhabi)

2006 WEC (Aachen) - both Dubai and Abu Dhabi spent the summer in Germany training for the event, but the week before the race Dubai determined that Abu Dhabi could not enter a rider, it would only be Dubai riders (royalty) entered, per a letter of agreement written a decade early that gave authority to Dubai to manage UAE's endurance program) (or so the story went)

2006 - an article was published (in a Dubai/Al Maktoum owned newspaper) alleging that an Abu Dhabi stable (royalty) used drugs

2008 WEC - once again, only Dubai was represented in the WEC

2009 - Al Maktoum (Dubai) was busted for drug use

2009 - the newspaper that published the 2006 article is punished.

hmmmm....

Steph

I don't think this was a matter of shutting down the paper to cover tracks, but rather shutting down the paper as punishment of a rival's previous audacity...

DUBAI: The United Arab Emirates' most popular newspaper suspended publication yesterday >>>for 20 days in compliance with a court ruling after being sued for a story alleging some of >>>the Abu Dhabi ruling family's horses were doped.

I know most of you I talk to delete all these posts about the UAE, but this is entire article worth reading (mainly because it appears to be one of the few that isn't their ruler's press release). When you shut down your most popular newspaper for 3 weeks to cover your tracks...right out in front of everybody, I can only imagine what kind of bribes you'd offer under the table to keep a story quiet! Better watch your back MaryAnne.
